the apathy of new yorkers

New Yorkers are either foolhardy or just plain unconcerned about their safety. Last week, my roommate called me in the office to tell me she had been evacuated from her office due to a bomb threat near her building. fyi, my building is about 5 blocks from her place.... so I told my colleagues, and tt seemingly alarming piece of news hardly elicited any bit of emotion on their faces. at all... they looked up, said "is that right?" in a patronizing tone and went back straight to work. I was like "wtf???"
So, despite the heightened security and credible threats about the possibility of terrorist acts carried out in subways, people are still going to work and to play as usual via the trusty subway, their faces stoic and seemingly unconcerned that they may be blown into smithereens... things that might have people in other places worked up in a frenzy is treated as a non-event in this strange city... I dont quite understand the dynamics yet, but i guess if i have been through as much as these new yorkers have over the past few years, i would be similarly unconcerned about this threat too.. but right now, i am stocking up on the batteries and water...
