a short discussion on shopping in nyc

Ruoying got into town yesterday morning, so after I got home from work and finally managed to rouse her from her deep sleep, we went to a nearby sushi bar for dinner, and a short walk around the neighborhood to get her acquainted with the area. Also makes it more convenient for me to send her on errands next week, hehe...
Since ruoying came with a desire to experience the la-di-da life of a lady who lunch, and since pa decided to bestow on me a nice cash gift, we took it upon ourselves to embark on a shopping trip of epic proportions today. Unfortunately, as we well know, you can never seem to find anything you want when you have the money, and when you are broke, those elusive goodies just pop up, taunting you as you walk past the well-decorated windows of bloomingdales and saks. That was exactly the case today, as we started out after lunch to the annual barney's sample sale. Tonnes of thin and beautiful girls were in combat mode, discerning the gems from the duds with their trained eyes, grabbing things off shelves and unabashedly changing in the full view of everyone else in the room (going to the changing rooms would be too slow, and the prime real estate next to the racks will be taken up if they left) as and when they felt like it. The designers (marc jacobs and gang) would be very pained to see their creations on the grubby floor of a chelsea warehouse if they knew how we were mistreating their designs. Luckily they would be heartened to know that people were buying all those "cheap sale things" like there was no tomorrow. Both Ruoying and I were intimidated by the scene, but we agreed that this was quintessentially new york, and when we have the money in the future, we will be here as one of those girls. It is seriously not very often you can get a $4000 lanvin dress for only $700.... =p
Next stop was the flea market on 26th street, or so we thought. Turned out that the flea market had moved its premise. BOO
Beaten but not yet totally discouraged yet, we took the train downtown to the famed century 21 in hopes for good buys, or the first buy of the day. After much scouring, all i bought in the end was a new pillow, while ruoying got track pants and a bath towel... By then we were running out of time and energy to continue on to more shops, and frankly, it seemed that we were out of luck too. So we went home to recuperate after that and had a stomach busting indian dinner to revive our flagging spirits a little later.
Moral of the story: When prepping for a major showdown between you and your credit card company, don't make too many plans.. the best purchases are often made impromptu!
